radtastic: the daily dose

Posted by arief on May 1, '09 12:41 AM for everyone

the sartorialist is one of my daily stop. It's a must. I love it for the simple fact that it freshen my perspective on how to develop personal style and quirk. Pretty much the opposite of today's teenagers tendency to follow fashion trend, no matter how ugly it looks on their figure. Remember slim jeans and ugly betty's hair? go to malls and they all look identical. personal style.. what personal style..?

And look at today's post! No celebrity back home can match such wit. My son will be as stylish as him one day.

Continuing my serial affair with linux, I got fairly excited when Ubuntu staff released 9.04, branding it Jaunty Jackalope. Speedy OS with catastrophically horrid name. Intrepid Ibex is a fine name. But this..?

despite the ridiculuous branding, It is actualy smooth and stylish, in a Mac OSX way. And that's a good thing. It has Growl-like notification, faster boot time, slick window panel, etc.

The best part is, you can get all this smooth styling with a click of a button. yes. no joke. All 8.10 users (Intrepid Ibex) can go to update manager, and click "upgrade". That's it. Few hours later (or months, considering 3rd world country slow connection), it will automatically restart with new OS ready.

Here's some screenshots..

The first 4 pictures in collage is the tapas mini set from Abdul & Charlie Restaurant. Bottom picture shows one of our new client's signature dish, delicious cod fish from Cheng Ho Court Restaurant. Not to be mistaken with Amy Search's Cheng Ho restaurant in Wangsa Maju, Cheng Ho Court is located in Balakong, Seri Kembangan. It has been listed as Best Restaurant Year 1998 by the Malaysia Tatler Magazine as well as the KL’s Top Restaurant 1999/2000 by the Wine & Dine Publication. The best part is, they offer a fully halal cuisine.

About few nights ago, a friend of mine sent me email asking about my camera and shooting gears. Althou i own several cameras, none of them considered to be THE workhorse cam. I'm not a pro yet. I haven't develop a preference to certain brand. Personally, it's so much fun to shoot with underrated cameras instead of those pro-grader. No kidding.

Here's what i feel about shooting with subpar cams. The moment you start dealing with tricky situations such as bad lighting, hyperactive kids running around your scene, or wider-than-your-lens-can-handle panorama shot, you are forced to push the limit of that camera to get the job done. I found that amusing. weird huh?

Last weekend was another rad session. A buffet shot for a nice hotel around KL outskirt. I picked up Pana Lumix with macro extension, Canon G7 with cheapo china-made flash, and 350D with several prime lenses. Althou most of the shots were taken with 350D, i couldn't wait to play around with G7 for some fun shots (including my partner's boobs sneaky shot. But she would kill me if i post that).

So, that's it sis. i hope this post answers your question.

Last friday was a helluva day for me. A food photography session for Palace Beach and Spa at Mines Resort City under the hottest sun of the week. I was literally cooked and burnt. But they have such a rad vista just behind the outdoorsy Abdul & Charlie restaurant, a man-made beach, huge lake, plenty of watersport activities, and smokin' @$$ masale bikinis.

The resto's featured in this month Malaysian FHM and upcoming Libur Magazine. Go ahead and check.

when Paris van Java lose its Parisian charm, i found my long lost sense of serenity just an hour ride from petaling jaya. Malaysia's own Le Château de Colmar, Bukit Tinggi. The Château itself seems artificial but it is surrounded by picturesque hills of Pahang. By the end of the day, i could only say.. yeah, i found a great spot for preweds :)

Sitting at the riviera.. Images from this particular city are just too beautiful to keep un-posted. I love this city so much. Who wouldn't?

In a week or so i'll be turning 26. Not that i really care. I never actually thought about it till now.

But few things happened (or will happen) this year including marriage plus some fancy title behind my ubiquitous name. Somehow it sounds more like liabilities than assets. Ya, add those with f**king global recession the media keep on yelling these days. Which means somebody have to stop kidding around and get serious.

Here are some highlights from previous trip

All taken with my trusty SonyEricsson phone cam. Malacca trip with my mates.
This phone served me well when G7 went low on battery.

True to be told! I learn a great deal of computing shit just by venturing into Linux world. My first Linux distro, Ubuntu 8.10, now sits on my macbook partition along with Mac OSX. Contrary to other people experiences, my first Linux choice is the one that i chose to settle with. Other distros after Ubuntu seem not-so-solid or simply didn't suit my taste. I tried Slax (very small OS, think of 50 mb size)., Fedora 10, Puppy Linux (another mini linux), MacPup Dingo (Mac-like Linux), gOS (Google-themed Linux), DSL (Damn Small Linux), PendriveLinux (faster-than-ur-blink speed, seriously), and finally Zenwalk.

Zenwalk is what i'm using now. It has what most full-blown Linux OSes have. Compare to Ubuntu, this one is smaller (500 mb), lighter, and faster. I might try to install it on my MP3 player tonite. Might be useful as a rescue disc. One thing i like is the XFCE environment. Simpler than Gnome interface. love it.

anyway, i post this using Zenwalk. Screen captured, used GIMP to resize the image, and posted. Done without a glitch.

Last December, a friend of mine got a chance to cover a Malaysian wedding in Johor. Although she's familiar with wedding bouquets, flower arrangements, designing invitation cards, and wedding decorations, this was her 2nd time covering the shot. Plus, sang manten ternyata mantan. lengkap dah groginya. bwahahahahaa..!

So here's the result. I help a bit with the color proofing.

This new year, everything started just right. Barbeque with my beloved family, friends, and fiancée, at our rural hillside home. Bandung weather at its best. Hope to come again next few months.
